With the city growing vertically and witnessing increasing incidents of fire, the Mumbai Fire Brigade in association with dna & Zee 24 Taas is organising a fire safety conclave.

Called 'Fire Safe Mumbai - An International Conclave', the event will be held on Saturday. Fire officials said that the city is witnessing construction of a large number of high rises. At the same time, recent fires that proved to be fatal have brought the focus back on fire safety norms.

"The Fire Brigade feels that there is an urgent need to create awareness among all the stakeholders to take appropriate measures at their level, to prevent incidents of fire instead of solely depending on Fire Brigade," said a fire official.

The conclave has been planned with the primary objective of creating mass awareness about preventing fires and mitigating their adverse effects. According to officials, the conclave will have a mix of domestic and international experts speaking on fire safety issues. Other stakeholders from the fire fighting and safety industry will also be part of the conclave. The conclave will focus on formulating a perspective which will serve as a guideline for fire brigade personnel, civic officials and industry experts too.

One of the major issues that will be discussed at the conclave is fire safety science, which has attracted considerable attention in western countries but is in its infancy in India.

Experts said that the discussions will help civic bodies across India, setting the trend. "This will be the maiden attempt in India to involve all the stakeholders on a single platform. Its agenda will be to build up a scientific basis for handling fire-related problems. It will seek to promote high standards, to encourage and stimulate civic planners to address fire problems, to establish a suitable administrative foundation and the ways and means to facilitate the applications aimed at reducing the loss to life and property," the official explained.
