Ever wondered whether fasting food can be experimented with and made into something interesting? With the Hindu holy month of Shravan having begun, fasting has started too. But there’s more to fasting food than the regular sabudana khichdi and purple yam, and it is worth trying out! JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar is hosting a special ‘Fasting & Feasting Food Festival’ in collaboration with Rushina Munshaw Ghildiyal, Owner of ‘A Perfect Bite Consulting and APB Cook Studio’ at JW Café.

The game of fasting

This fest showcases food made with ingredients that are typically consumed during Hindu fasting, as those who observe Shravan fasts don’t consume regular food. A few of these ingredients include barnyard millet, sabudana, rajgira flour, water chestnut flour (singhare ka atta) among many others. Chefs at JW Cafe and Rushina Munshaw Ghildiyal are offering experimental yet traditional fasting food like Farali Pattice, Farali Burger, Sitaphal Milkshake with Saffron Ice Cream, Kokum Lassi, Kesar Aam Panna, Coconut Banana and Dry Fruit Shake, Samo Rice Kheer, Samo Rice Upma and more.

What I tried

Among the several fasting foods that were prepared, I tried the Coconut Banana and Dry Fruit Shake, Samo Rice Upma, Sabudana Khichdi and Sabudana Seekh. Though most of these delicacies were a treat, the Sabudana Khichdi could have been treated better. The one dish that I truly enjoyed was Samo Rice Upma, which was perfectly balanced sans any blandness, which is how Samo usually tastes. Sabudana Seekh was another favourite as it had a clever mix of ingredients that did not end up making it oily. The Coconut Banana and Dry Fruit Shake was simply amazing and I recommend it to all the calorie-conscious folks as it didn't contain sugar and yet tasted great.

This food fest will go on till August 12 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
