IIT-B trumps IIT-D for the first time on global ranking list

On a global scale, on the QS World University Rankings list for the year 2014-15, released on Tuesday, IIT Bombay leads IIT Delhi for the first time. Where IIT-B ranked 222nd, the rank of IIT Delhi is 235. However, the University of Mumbai has been listed between the range of 551-600, which the previous year, was between 601-650.

The QS World University Rankings are based on four key pillars -- research, teaching, employability and internationalization -- and the methodology consists of six indicators like academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), and faculty student ratio (20%), citations per faculty (20%), international students (5%) and international faculty (5%).

Indian universities still do not feature among the top 200 institutions on the QS list.At the 222nd spot, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) overtook its counterpart in Delhi for the first time. The IIT, Delhi has been the leading educational institute in India throughout the first ten editions of the QS rankings, but slipped to the 235th this year.

Ben Sowter, head of the QS intelligence unit, said, "India may not have made as much progress as it would have liked to in the new rankings, but new measures always take time to be reflected. Indian universities are actively engaging with the rankings and this should bear fruit in the medium term."

While in the global top ten, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from US is numero uno like last year, second rank has been occupied by University of Cambridge from UK that was at third spot in 2013.Similarly, among Indian Universities in QS world university rankings 2014/15, while IITB has better rank that IIT Delhi, University of Delhi rank is between 421-430, which was 441-450 last year, University of Mumbai is 551-600, which was between 601-650 in last year rankings.

Rashmi Uday Kumar, IIT, Bombay, spokesperson, said, "Indeed it's a good news that the IITs have improved their positions in the global rankings and have become number one in India again. This affirms that we are going in the right direction."
