Taking a back seat on the issue of separate statehood for Vidarbha, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis assured the legislative council that his party may have a preference for smaller state, but he has no intentions of dividing the state.

Addressing the legislative council on Wednesday morning, Fadnavis said that he is the chief minister of united Maharashtra. "BJP has always preferred the concept of smaller states whereas Shiv Sena has supported the bigger state but those are the party lines. Here, we work as government and our government is united on this issue. We are working as one government here and I am the chief minister of the united Maharashtra," said Fadnavis.

He also requested the Opposition to settle this issue now and allow the house to function normally in the coming days. Senior Congress leader Narayan Rane, however, did not find his reply satisfactory and asked him to clarify the issue in more explicit words.

The elected representatives from Vidarbha are disappointed with the Fadnavis's ambiguous stand over separate Vidarbha. "People voted us because we had promised them separate statehood for Vidarbha. Fadnavis, before the state assembly election, made a promise that after coming to power we will make separate Vidarbha within six months. Now, he is changing his stand. We are feeling cheated," said a BJP MLA on condition anonymity.
