Bright lights, carefully and colourfully decorated homes, the many presents one is sure to receive and the coming together of family members for celebration, Christmas brings with it a warmth that even counteracts the frigid December weather.

This is the reason everyone, non-Christians including, like to celebrate the festival. And, housing societies that believe in giving its residents an opportunity to get together and unwind, have much in store this Christmas.

Seawoods Estate Ltd had a celebration on Tuesday evening as many have plans for family outings on the day of Christmas. The idea was ‘for the kids and by the kids’. A total of 15 group dance performances were staged by children ranging from tiny tots to teens.

“We had given them Christmas related props like hats, stars, candy sticks, bells, Santa caps, stockings and other things,” said Ramini Rao, dance coordinator. This was preceded by a carol singing session and skit.

With one of the senior citizens in the society being the cheery Santa Claus, mini train and bungee jumping for kids and a dinner buffet, all residents had an enjoyable evening.

With around 1,500 red and white balloons, the Kesar Harmony CHS in Kharghar will be decked up quite well for the celebration tomorrow. “As we usually have our residents put up performances, this year we decided to rope in professional entertainers. They will be having a variety of games for every age group. This will be followed by a magic show. There is also a cake cutting ceremony in the beginning,” said Rachna Saxena, head of cultural committee said.

At Gunina CHS, kids will have an opportunity to jog their grey cells and indulge in some sweat-inducing physical activity. “There will be a treasure hunt for which kids can volunteer on the spot. All the items will be hidden in the society,” said Roopa Mahadevan, adding that it will be followed by a movie screening.

Keeping in mind the spirit of Christmas, which is giving and spreading smiles, Milloni housing society in sector 27, Nerul, has attempted to do the same. Residents from all societies in sector 27 will be putting up different kinds of stalls and the proceeds will go to cancer patients of Bharat Seva Shram in Vashi. “A chemotherapy session itself costs Rs5,000, so we hope to gather at least Rs50,000. Also, we have set up a collection centre for old clothes, utensils and other such articles that will be given to the NGO Goonj,” said Mousami Mahapatra adding, “Our aim of doing this is to create awareness among our kids about the importance of charity.”

There will not only be food stalls but games, art and craft, tattoo-making, to name a few.
