As curtains rise on the Maharashtra legislature’s monsoon session from Monday, the opposition is sharpening its knives to take on the state government on issues like the Adarsh inquiry committee report, an extension being given to the Madhav Chitale committee probing the alleged irregularities in irrigation projects and the setting up of a theme park on Mahalaxmi racecourse.

The opposition also wants that the suspension of MLAs who assaulted PSI Sachin Suryavanshi for stopping Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) legislator Kshitij Thakur for speeding on the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) be revoked.

Leaders of the opposition in the legislative assembly and council Eknath Khadse and Vinod Tawade said they would seek that the report of the Adarsh inquiry commission, which was submitted to the state government on the last day of the budget session on April 18, be tabled before the house.

The controversy had claimed the scalp of the then chief minister Ashok Chavan in November 2010.

The opposition also boycotted the chief minister’s customary tea party on Sunday. However, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan sought to parry questions on the Adarsh report being tabled in the legislature.

“It will be tabled in the legislature at the right time,” he said, adding that since the committee had been constituted under the Commission of Enquiry Act, the report needed to be put before the house. If it was leaked out, it would amount to a breach of privilege.

The opposition will also question the extension to the Chitale committee, delay in the makeover of the state administrative headquarters of Mantralaya, which caught fire in July 2012, and pending infrastructure projects in Mumbai. The Shiv Sena and BJP are also opposed to the long-pending bill to crackdown on blind faith and point out that some new points incorporated in it are already part of the Indian Penal Code.

After the lease of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) expired on May 31, the Shiv Sena and BJP are seeking that a theme park be constructed on the 225-acre Mahalaxmi racecourse. The Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) also wants the newly-inaugurated Eastern Freeway to be named after Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

The opposition will also target the government on issues like the rise in prices of essentials, collapse of old and dilapidated buildings in Mumbai and Thane which have claimed lives, the metropolis being affected during the downpour in June, deteriorating law and order and rising activities of Maoists, who have also issued a death threat to home minister RR Patil.
