Two dozen right-wing outfits staged a huge rally on Monday morning in Kolhapur, protesting against the alleged corruption in Pashchim Maharashtra Devasthan Samiti (PMDS), the state-run temple trust which controls over 3,067 temples in Maharashtra.

They demanded that all temples be freed from government's clutches and be handed over to devotees to stop babus' malpractices. Over 2,000 people and priests participated in the procession from Gandhi Maidan to Bindu Chowk, carrying placards and banners.

The protest march was led by Hindu Janjagruti Samiti (HJS) in association with Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Hindu Mahasabha and Bajrang Dal among others. They have demanded a CBI probe into the alleged financial irregularities and missing land and ornaments in possession of Shri Mahalaxmi temple of Kolhapur and other big temples.

"(The) Temple committee is indulging in several malpractices, such as not maintaining any record of the donations in the form of cash and ornaments offered by devotees, not maintaining record of thousands of acres of land belonging to the temples, corruption of the amount received as royalty towards mining works carried out on the land belonging to the temples, and supplying grains of inferior quality for naivedya," alleged Sunil Ghanwat, HJS coordinator.

The outfits submitted a memorandum to city collector Rajaram Mane, who is also chairman of the PMDS. Mane said, "I will forward their request to the government."
