Hearing on Mumbai University ordinance put-off to October 27

Mumbai University was suppose to announce its decision on engineering students, who had moved the Bombay high court challenging MU ordinance of 2013, on October 21. But unfortunately, the hearing did not take place as the judges were unavailable. MU was also not ready with its decision. The hearing has now been rescheduled for October 27. The students are however not thrilled by the decision because the hearing is on the same day as their viva.

What did the student want?
Krutika Sakhare, a student, had moved the court against the MU ordinance of 2013, which makes it mandatory for engineering students to appear for their fourth year exams as per the new syllabus. HC, on October 13, had directed MU to consider the representation of the students, who wanted the university to allow them to appear for their VII and VIII semester exams in 2014-2015 itself after clearing ATKT, as the university had allowed something similar in 2009 by issuing a circular.

HC had also asked university to submit its decision on this matter on Tuesday. But the hearing did not take place and it has now been postponed to October 27.

Has that affected students?
It has. Shashi Kamat (name changed), a student, said: "The vivas are starting from October 27. The written exams will be held in November. If the hearing continues to be delayed, we won't know whether we should prepare for our fourth year or not."

Dr MA Khan, registrar, Mumbai University, said: "In principal, we have come to the conclusion that such concession or relaxation cannot alter the admission norms. The Mumbai University has asked the high court for some more time as it has not yet taken a final decision.
