House on Sunday, where they condemned the statement made by US presidential candidate Donald Trump on Muslims. The meeting was initiated by the Harmony Foundation and Archbishop Oswald Cardinal Gracias at the Archbishop House on Sunday.

Besides condemning the government's move, the leaders spoke about the need for more inter-faith meetings, responsible reporting by the media, isolation of a community after terror attacks and the government handling of issues among minority communities.

“Good governance is very important but it was very insensitive on part of the government to choose that day. Christmas is a celebration day for all. To call someone to office on the day is like having a distraction – intentional or otherwise. The government should be sensitive,” said Gracias.

“India is a secular country and we should be guided by the Constitution,” said Maulana Zaheer Abbas Rizvi. “There should be a holiday on that day. That is brotherhood and gives a good message to the Christian community,” said Inderjeet Singh, Head Granthi, Gurudwara Dhan Pothhar Nagar in Santacruz. “Talking about the recent food-related controversy, Shilpa Chheda, a researcher from the Jain community, said it had more to do with political and economic reasons.

“The culture of this country is to live together and that is what we have to do,” said Maulana Mustaqeen Azmi, president of the Jamiat Ulema-I-Hind (Maharashtra). “The idea of organising this event was to condemn Trump's views and have a better inter-faith interaction,” said Abraham Mathai of the Harmony Foundation.
