The arrest of a city-based government doctor on Monday has thrown light on an alleged extortion racket. The crime branch of Vasai arrested Dr Anil Yadav for demanding Rs 30 lakh from a developer and he was taken into custody on a transit remand from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), meanwhile, in its parallel probe has found Yadav's assets to be around Rs 100 crore.

Dr Anil Yadav was arrested from Ghaziabad after a developer complained against him to the top officers from Maharashtra Police department. After a complaint was registered, the crime branch took over the investigations and in a trap Yadav's alleged accomplice, Amol Patil, was caught red-handed.

According to the crime branch, Yadav was posted in Vasai as Public Health Officer but he was later transferred to Osmanabad after being arrested on corruption charges in 2010 by the ACB, Thane. Yadav did not join his duty, and instead, formed a team of people who filed Right to Information queries at government offices and issued threats to renowned builders to extort money.

"Yadav targeted businessmen in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and in other parts of the state. The demand of money was made depending on the project value and the transactions were either done in cash or the builder was forced to transfer the property on his name," said an officer. "We have come across names of politicians and ex-policemen who are involved in the extortion racket, and three cases against him to probe are in place," said Ashok Honmane, in charge of the local crime branch.

Meanwhile, a senior officer from ACB revealed: "Yadav's assets and bank details are estimated to be around Rs 100 crore. He has invested in properties in Maharashtra and neighbouring states."
