In the beginning of this year, the primary education department asked schools to take strict action on teachers who are into consumption of alcohol, tobacco and cigarette while teaching students in classroom. The department has now asked schools to send in the details of such teachers against whom action has been taken, till now.

The primary education department urged education officials in January, 2016 to submit the report of teachers who chew pan, eat tobacco or drink alcohol during teaching hours in school. The department issued a circular in order to withhold such teachers from government facilities or suspend them. The circular was issued at that time after receiving complaints from various NGOs. The non-government organization complained that teachers are setting wrong examples for students to follow.

The circular recently issued is by Sharad Gosavi, deputy director of primary education Pune, on 14 September to all divisional deputy directors and all education officers of Zilla Parishad asking for details such as total number of teachers in district, number of teachers consuming pan, tobacco, alcohol during teaching hours, on how many number of such teachers action was taken and what action has been taken on them.

Prashant Redij, spokesperson, Maharashtra State Principal Association, said, "Looking at a recent circular it shows that may be when there will be legislature sessions, government would like to be ready with the statistics on how many such teachers action was taken if this topic is raised by anyone."

Rahul Suvarna, activists working with an NGO in government schools, said, "I have worked with couple of NGOs that are imparting education in many schools, but I have not come across such teachers in Urban area. The NGOs that have complained might have found one or two such schools that too in rural area. Even if government try to gather information if of their teachers who are into consumption of alcohol, beedi or pan, I don't think schools would accept and provide such information."
