Twenty seven-year-old Prashant Tandalekar, a resident of Raigad, was operated for a rare condition of Ankylosing spondylitis at St. George Hospital on Monday. Tandalekar was diagnosed with Ankylosing when he was only 16, as a result of which he was unable to move or stand for more than ten years.

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a form of arthritis which causes back pain and if not treated, could result in spinal fusion, leading to a defective posture.

Prior to his treatment by local doctors, he was diagnosed with this genetic disorder a few months before his Class 10th board exams. He was unable to appear for his exams due to his condition then.

Dr Nadir Shah, Head of Orthopedics at St George's Hospital, said, "Two months ago, we operated his left hip and on Monday, the right side of the hip was operated. He'll be able to walk after the operation. Usually, Ankylosis Spondylitis happens after 40 years of age, but this is a rare case where the deformities happened in early 20s." A team of anesthetic, lead by Associate Professor Dr Sukruti Atram, helped the doctors to perform the two hour-long surgery.

Tandalekar had wanted to become an Army officer but had lost hope after he was bedridden for a few years. "I am planning to start studying again and complete my studies. I felt confident after the first surgery as I was able to walk and go outside the four walls of my house," Tandalekar said.

According to the orthopedic doctors, such cases are rare, only one or two patients in six months as the disease is not easily diagnosed. The condition is more relevant in males than females. One per cent of the whole population gets affected by Ankylosing Spondylitis. If detected on time, though expensive, the disorder can be easily treated.
