A 23-year-old man residing in Ghatkopar (East) was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping his neighbour, a 17-year-old girl, at knife-point about a month ago.

The wife of the accused, Akhilesh Mourya, is pregnant and had gone to her parents’ home in Uttar Pradesh for the delivery. Mourya, who owns a vegetable stall in Ramabai Colony, has been remanded in police custody till August 30 by a local court.

The underage girl and Mourya have known each other for about a year, said the police. The alleged rape took place early in the morning on July 25 after the girl’s parents had left home.

Her parents have a vegetable shop that is located right in front of Mourya’s. Every morning, the girl’s parents left home to sell vegetables, leaving their daughter alone at home.

“Soon after they had left for the shop, Mourya slipped into the house and threatened the girl with a knife and raped her,” said senior inspector Suresh Nirmal of Pant Nagar police station where a case has been registered.

Warning the girl not to mention the incident to anyone, Mourya threatened to kill her if she mentioned anything to anyone, said Nirmal.

Subsequently, Mourya too left the city to be with his pregnant wife in Uttar Pradesh.

The girl, meanwhile, informed her parents about the sexual attack. When Mourya returned to the city on Sunday evening, her parents lodged a police complaint against him.

The accused has been booked for rape and for threatening to kill the girl.

He has been  booked under sections 376 (rape), 452, 506 (II) (threatening to kill) IPC and sections of Protection of Children for Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
