Ganapati Visarjan: Traffic diversions and roads to avoid in Mumbai

As Mumbaikars celebrate the last day of Ganeshotsav today, Mumbai police have laid out an elaborate traffic management and security plans for the city. As many as 53 road stretches will be closed to vehicular traffic from noon to 6 am the following day. Moreover, 54 roads will be converted into one-ways. The Mumbai police have also released a special Whatsapp number for the devotees.

Besides road closures at important stretches, 99 spots have been prohibited for parking on the last day of immersion. Traffic restrictions will be imposed on September 5, from 12 noon to 6 am the next day. An Emergency Response and Mobile Surveillance Control and Command Centre van will be stationed there. Around 5,000 CCTV cameras installed across the city are directly linked to the van. Drones will also be used to keep a watch on the activities of revelers.

akhs of people gathering at Girgaum Chowpatty, anti ramming barricades and face detection cameras will be used during the last day of immersion. In South Mumbai, VP road will be closed from C.P. Tank circle to Bhalchandra Company. RR road will be closed from Charni road station to Portuguese Church upto Prarthana Samaj. Nanubhai Desai Road will be totally closed.  In the Malabar hill traffic division. Jaganath Shanker Sheth Marg will be closed from Princess Street junction to SVP road junction.

Parking of vehicles along both sides of the following South Mumbai roads will be prohibited from 11am to 6am next day. Nathalal Parekh marg from its junction with Sadhu Vsvani Marg to its junction with Badhwar Park. Capt. Prakash Pethe Marg from its junction with Sadhu Vasvani Marg to its junction with Badhawar Park.

With 54 roads converted into one way, Nathalal Parekh Marg Colaba will be closed from its junction with Capt. Prakash Ptehe Marg for South bound and existing one way between Pandey Marg and Colaba Post office shall be used for both ways. Kalbadevi road will be closed from its junction with Kika street to Vardhaman Chowk for South Bound traffic. French Bridge will be closed for South bound vehicluar traffic i.e. No Entry from Nyaymurthi Sitaram Patkar Marg. Walkeshwar road will be closed for vehicular traffic proceeding down the hill from Teen Batti to Band Stand (Except for BEST buses).

Dr. Rashmi Karandikar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), said, "We have geared up for the last day of the festival and the security measures are in place. The drones will be used to monitor the situation while CCTV cameras will keep a close watch on the activities of the revellers."

"We will ensure that no untoward incident takes place and we have cancelled the leaves of our policemen and every policemen will be on the Mumbai street to protect the citizens.", said Karandikar.

  • BMC has warned all devotees to exercise caution while visiting sea beaches during Ganpati immersion as high tides between 1.09m and 4.21m are expected to hit the city.
