Inspired by Bandra's 'Love Mumbai' installation — which has become a major tourist attraction — a local councillor along with the BMC has set up a typography installation "Save Mangroves" and information kiosks in Dahisar to create awareness about the coastal vegetation.

"I have been visiting a patch of mangroves located at Kanderpada on Link Road in Dahisar West that has a huge stretch of pristine mangroves. Inspired by the art work at Bandra promenade it struck me that something similar could be done here to raise awareness about mangroves," said Avkash Jadhav, professor at Xavier's College as well as a nominated corporator from Sena.

He discussed the idea with local Sena councillor Abhishek Ghosalkar, who got the necessary permission from the BMC for installation. "There are two other installations of display panels set up to provide information about mangroves, including different types of mangroves species, the different types of flora and fauna which is supported by the mangroves as well as various laws for its protection along with the logo Save Mangroves," said Jadhav, who even gave his BMC funds for this project.

He added that this was part of a campaign to make people aware about the importance of mangroves in protecting us from the tidal waves and how it's a breeding ground for the aquatic life.

Meanwhile, Ghosalkar said that there are pictures of mangroves with the locals campaigning to save it on the panels. "We are urging people not to dump anything in the mangroves. We are also putting up bollards at the entrance of mangrove patch from where trucks used to enter to dump debris," he said, adding that he was also considering plantation and putting up taller railings to deter people from dumping.

Harish Pandey, chairman of New Link Road Residents Forum (NLRRF) that has played a crucial role in saving mangroves in Dahisar area, welcomed the move. "Any activity done by councillors and BMC to create awareness pertaining to mangroves is always appreciated. However, for better protection of mangroves there should be stronger deterrent and quick action taken by all stakeholders so that no one can dare to destroy mangroves or dump debris in it," he said.
