Visitors to the city's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) on Wednesday faced the inconvenience of dirty toilets, because hundreds of housekeeping staff are on a flash strike.

The staff from housekeeping company Krystal have been on strike after their demand for a pay hike was turned down. Sources said that the workers' agitation has the backing of certain political parties. Airport sources said that it is the toilets at domestic terminals 1A and 1B which are mainly affected.

Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL) officials said that although some housekeeping personnel have gone on a flash strike, alternative arrangements have been made. MIAL officials insist that all measures have been made to keep the airport vicinity clean.

Over 1,900 workers at CSIA started the strike from 10 pm on Tuesday evening and resumed duties at 2 pm on Wednesday, one of the union members said. "They have not increased our pay for the last eight years in spite of repeated pleas from us to do so," said an employee who is affiliated with the Shiv Sena's union wing Bharatiya Kamgar Sena. Another employee said there have been paltry salary hikes which are not in line with inflation. Salaries have been increased by Rs200-300 in the past, taking the gross total to Rs8,500 a month, which, the workers say, is inadequate.

The GVK-run MIAL has outsourced the housekeeping work to a city-based company called Krystal Integrated Services, which employs these 1,900 workers. Out of these around 1,000 are in the international terminal while the rest are at the domestic terminal.

The Krystal employee added that 15 days ago, they had struck work for two hours and resumed duties after the management promised to look into the matter.
