For the first time in the history of Maharashtra, on May 1, a flag depicting a separate Vidarbha state will be hoisted. The programme would be led by none other than former advocate general of Maharashtra Sreehari Aney and would be held in Nagpur, the hometown of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Vidarbha Rajya Andolan Samiti, Vidarbha Pradesh Vikas Parishad, the People's Republican Party led by MLC Jogendra Kavade, Bahujan Republican Ekata Manch, Vidarbha Connect (VCan) and a few other organisations will jointly hoist the flag for a separate Vidarbha state at Vishnuji Ki Rasoi in Nagpur on Sunday. The programme would be held at 8.30am.

Aney would then be taking the Vidarbha statehood cause to the national level by speaking about the issue at the Delhi Press Club on May 5.

Various organisations held a meeting in Nagpur on Friday, in which different leaders proposed a number of programmes and initiatives in support for a separate state of Vidarbha. Aney said that the demand for a separate Vidarbha state was being pushed through in a democratic manner. He cautioned that if at all the legitimate demands are met with violent opposition, and the agitation in turn takes a violent turn, the responsibility for the same would lie with the government.

Aney said that he has time and again stated his opinion on the need for a separate Vidarbha state and has also made it clear that martyrs did not lay their lives down for Vidarbha to be included in a united Maharashtra. He said that if at all the Shiv Sena wants to bring in a resolution in the state Assembly for a united Maharashtra, the party would be welcome to do so since that would bring to the fore the identities of all those who are against a separate Vidarbha state and those who are for it. He added that in such a case, the BJP's true face would also be revealed in the state Assembly.

The organisations that are in favor of a separate Vidarbha state are circulating WhatsApp messages underlining the need for the same. They contend that despite a development backlog for years, as underlined by various committees, the state government has been ignoring Vidarbha. Western Maharashtra leaders have also exploited Vidarbha's resources, which has led to poverty in the region.
