Undeterred after being prevented from entering some housing societies on Turner Road in Bandra West, on Saturday, for door-to-door campaigning, citizen activist Dereyk Talker does not give up.

"Some societies need prior permission from the secretary, or else they don't allow you in. Well, in that case, I ask if there is a letterbox to keep my party manifesto or else give it to the watchmen, so that they can pass it on to the society members," he says.

A first-time candidate, Talker is contesting in the upcoming BMC polls as BJP candidate in ward 101, covering areas like Bandra Talao, National Library, Chimbai Village, Dr Bhaba Hospital, Turner Road and Carter Road.

During his campaign, Talker endeavours to meet as many residents as possible either by visiting them at home or by leaving pamphlets, outlining his vision for the ward, at the entrance.

At one housing society on Turner Road, Talker is stopped by a watchman, who assures him that he will make sure Talker's manifesto reaches the society's members.

"Even I want the BJP to win. Don't worry, I will give the manifesto to every family residing in this building," says the watchman.

Talker is contesting against Congress candidate Asif Ahmed Zakaria, who has been voted to power twice, from the same ward.

The sitting corporator Zakaria has been actively involved with citizen activists from the ward.

In a bid to defeat him, BJP, at the last minute, decided to field a citizen activist from the ward as their candidate for the party.

Speaking about the issues the residents are facing in the ward, Talker says, "The issues differ from area to area. The voters in the slum area are concerned about basic necessities like water supply, deteriorating condition of the roads, and garbage issues, while the posh locality voters are more concerned about personal safety, traffic and open spaces. A citizen activist is more aware about the area and the issues faced by the residents of theses different areas."

Ward 101 was earlier numbered as ward 95, and Zakaria has been a sitting corporator in the ward for the last two terms.

Other candidates contesting from the ward are Sunil Jadhav of Shiv Sena, Sitara Singh of Nationalist Congress Party and Atul Dhone of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
