The first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) which will have a capacity to handle 50 lakh passengers will be operationalised by December 2019, said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The entire project, which is worth Rs 16,700 crore, and will take the load off already saturated Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) in Mumbai, will be completed in another two-and-half years after the first phase is ready.

Speaking in the state legislative assembly's budget session on Tuesday during question hour, Fadnavis said the project, the foundation for which was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently, would be completed in two phases. "The deadline which has been agreed upon by the developer is December 2019 for one terminal building which can handle 50 lakh passengers and a runway," he added.

"The entire project will be completed in another two to two-and-half years after this," said Fadnavis.

Replying to a question by former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan (Congress) and others, Fadnavis said 98% of the project affected people had granted their consent for the project, and accepted their rehabilitation and compensation package. The project affected will not be charged developed fees if they develop the land allocated to them on their own, but these charges will have to be paid by the third-party in case any third-party interests are created.

The much-delayed project, which will consist of two runways, is being developed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) as the implementing agency. The airport will be built by the GVK, which currently operates the Mumbai airport.
