Denying job on the basis of religious consideration came in for all-round criticism on Wednesday, when a youth was denied job because he was a Muslim. Zishan Khan (22) had to face religious bias when his application to Hari Krishna Export Pvt Ltd was turned down.

The reason given by the company's human resources department was "they hire only non-Muslims".

Khan, who lives in Kurla, had applied for a job, along with his friends, after completing his final semester exams on May 12.

"We were all looking for a job, when one of my friends got to know of this place. They were looking to hire in bulk for various posts. I applied for a job on May 19 and within 15 minutes they replied that they were rejecting me owing to my religious background," Khan told dna.

Khan has filed an FIR with the Vinoba Bhave Nagar police station in Kurla. "I had first taken a shot of their response and posted it on Facebook. A lot of people started commenting on it. While I have decided not to take the job even if they apologise, later I decided not to let them go scot-free," he added.

The police registered a case against under section 153 (b) (denying rights on reason of religion, race, language or region) against the company. Senior inspector SB Raut said, "We have launched an investigation and action will be taken as per law."

Political leaders have slammed the move. While minister for minority affairs Eknath Khadse condemned it, Samajwadi Party chief Abu Asim Azmi said he will be taking a morcha to the company office.

Mohammed Hussain Khan, chairperson of Maharashtra State Minorities Commission, said, "India is a secular country. All have the right to work. What happened is against humanity and constitution."

The company, however, said, "We wish to reiterate that this is an error done by one of the newly joined HR trainees. Company functions without being biased with any caste, religion and gender. In fact, more than 50 employees are from minority community and people from 28 states are working in our group companies, some of them being with us for more than 12 years. Appropriate action has been taken against the trainee."
