A minor fire erupted inside the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Parel on Monday evening. There were no reports of any casualties or injuries in the incident.

The blaze was sparked, at around 3:40 pm, in the old document storage room of the hospital. It quickly raged in the nearby rooms of building, due to the stacked up papers and files.

Six fire tenders, including two jumbo tankers, and two ambulances were pressed into action, which doused the inferno in about two hour's time.

"The fire was of a number 1 call and was quickly brought under control. There were no casualties in the incident as all patients were safely evacuated out along with the medical staff in time," a senior fire brigade officer said from the incident spot.

The fire was suspected of having been triggered due to a short-circuit in the electrical duct of the godown, which primarily stored case paper files, medical records, documents and other information in hard format.

The incident was the first blaze of the New Year in South Mumbai region. Last year, the city witnessed as many as 25 major fires from different parts of the city, leaving a gaping question on the precautionary and safety measures implemented by the civic body.

According to statistics, available with iamin, there were 23 incidents of major fires, of number 2 call and two brigade calls, between January 1, 2015 to December 30, 2015.

The year also saw the death of four senior fire brigade officers - Chief Fire Officer Sunil Nesrikar, Deputy Chief Fire Officer Sudhir Amin, Assistant Divisional Fire Officer Sanjay Rane and Byculla Station Officer Mahendra Desai, who were killed in a massive blaze at South Mumbai, in the month of May.
