The crime branch has registered an FIR against socialite Sheetal Mafatlal on the charge of framing three people by filing a false complaint about theft of several expensive paintings. The action to prosecute Mafatlal follows a directive of a city court.

Last year, crime branch sources said, the investigators had approached a lower court with a B-summary report in the painting theft case and sought permission to initiate criminal proceedings against Mafatlal.

In the case of a B-summary report, the police become the complainant and register a case against the original complainant, stating that s/he had complained to the police with malicious intent.

According to sources in the Mumbai crime branch, the investigating agency had filed a B-summary report in the painting theft case before the lower court. The crime branch had also sought permission to prosecute Mafatlal for allegedly filing a false complaint and misleading the police.

"The case was initially registered at the Gamdevi police station in 2012, where Mafatlal had filed a complaint, stating that three of her friends — Arif Patel, Farukh Wadia and friend Yasmin MY — had sold off 31 original paintings that were kept at their apartment and had replaced the originals with fake ones," said an officer privy to the investigation.

"Our investigation revealed that Mafatlal herself had replaced the original paintings with fake ones and hidden the former, which we recovered a few months back."

Accordingly, the Mumbai crime branch filed a B-summary report in the case, while seeking permission to prosecute Mafatlal. Finally, on Thursday, an FIR was registered against her for forgery and cheating.

Confirming the development, additional commissioner of police (crime) KMM Prasanna said, "We have registered an FIR against her and investigation is going on. The FIR was registered on the order of the court..."
