A 49-year-old senior executive with a private company fell off the Vashi creek bridge while trying to retrieve his mobile phone on Monday morning. He was, however, rescued by a fisherman, who happened to be in the vicinity.
According to the police, Sunil Sawant, a resident of Panvel, was travelling to his office in Tilak Nagar in his car with his driver and a relative, around 9.15am. On reaching the bridge in Vashi, he asked his driver to stop the car and then alighted to throw some flowers in the creek.
"Sawant's mobile phone that he had kept in his shirt pocket, fell down as he bent forward to throw the flowers. When he tried retrieving the phone, he lost his balance and fell off the bridge," said S Paradke, assistant police inspector from Vashi police station.
A fisherman from Vashi village, Savan Bhoir, was fishing in the creek at that time. He reached the spot within a few minutes and rescued Sawant.
"Sawant, thankfully, did not suffer injury in the accident. He was conscious and stable when he was fished out of the water. The traffic officials deployed near the bridge, later brought him to the police station and informed his family about the incident," another police officer said. The police have not registered any case.
This is the second such incident in this month, where a victim falling off the Vashi creek bridge, has been rescued by the fishermen of the area. A 22-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl from Ulhasnagar attempted suicide by jumping off the bridge on February 3. The duo decided to take the drastic step as their parents were not ready to accept their relationship. A local fisherman, who was having his breakfast near the creek rescued them and then informed the police. They were later admitted to NMMC hospital in Vashi and was discharged after a few days.
