The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Tuesday launched its anti-Bombay and pro-Mumbai agitation again. This time the target was not the production house or the new chief minister, but the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Sharmila Tagore, whom the party is holding responsible for allowing the word Bombay in recent films.

A delegation led by Maharashtra Navnirman Cine Workers’ Association president Ameya Khopkar submitted a letter of demands, signed by MNS president Raj Thackeray, asking Tagore to not certify any film which carries the word ‘Bombay’ instead of ‘Mumbai’.

“From now on, we will not go around production houses targeting the producers, but the board will be held responsible and we cannot be held responsible for further consequences,” wrote Thackeray in the letter given to Tagore. Khopkar has also made it clear that the board holds complete responsibility, as the change in the name has come through a law and the changes have been acknowledged worldwide. “They must follow government decisions and take the necessary steps,” said Khopkar.

The letter given to Tagore says that the city’s name was changed to Mumbai from Bombay as per the Maharashtra Act 25, 1996 and still the films are using ‘Bombay’ with the board’s permission and therefore it should be condemned. “We have also heard that the upcoming film Break Ke Baad has used the word Bombay and if it is true then the board will be held responsible,” Khopkar added.

Recently, Thackeray had also asked the chief minister to use ‘Mumbai’ and not ‘Bambai’, telling him that he was now the chief minister
of Maharashtra and not a minister in Delhi.
