At 10.30 am on Thursday, when Eman Ahmed (36) will leave Saifee Hospital, she will no longer need a crane as she did on February 11 when she first came to Mumbai. At 170 kg, Ahmed is like many other obese patients the hospital regularly sees.

“Let’s move forward from this. We wish Eman all the best and hope she gets well soon,” said Dr M Lakdawala. “This was also the first time in the world where we have got the chance to investigate such a case, but to take the research forward we will need Shaimaa’s consent,” he added.

Shaimaa will now accompany Eman to VPS Healthcare’s Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi where she will also be joined by their mother. A team of specialists from the hospital is already in city.

Doctors at Saifee have also identified several other international patients from across the world, who are over 200 kg, for treatment.

Eman currently undergoes physiotherapy twice a day and is given medicines to control her other issues like thyroid and kidney related problems.

She would be taken in a special Lourano chair out of the hospital, but considering her current size she would be taken in a normal ambulance. Burjeel hospital has said that they would extend both physical and psychological rehabilitation to her.

When DNA met Eman on Wednesday she was conscious and nodded in response to greetings. She appeared to be aware of the fact that she would be moved to Abu Dhabi in a day. One of the nurses responsible for her care said, “We have cared for her for three months, how can we not miss her once she is gone”

Meanwhile, Saifee Hospital will soon host seven super-obese children — five of them from Gujarat and two from Maharashtra. “They will be put on a special drug trial of a US-based company. Their treatment would not involve any surgery,” Dr Lakdawala added.
