In the backdrop of road safety week, which begins on January 11, the state education department had asked schools to conduct awareness programmes on road safety for students. Additionally, even an optional subject on Road Safety Patrol (RSP) was also introduced a few years back in Mumbai schools. However, not many schools have opted for the subject till date.

Despite the low response the traffic department that is training RSP to 582 school students expects a 1.5 times increase in enrollment across the city's schools.

The Road Safety Patrol subject was introduced a few years back along with other subjects like civil defence and scouts and guides. But it seems not many schools have opted the RSP subject and the education department have no data on how many schools have opted this subject and teaching their students.

Amitesh Kumar, Joint CP Traffic, said, "We wont be able to comment on how many schools are teaching or following RSP curriculum. But lot of schools are showing interest and by next academic year we think this number will increase by one and half times more."

BB Chauhan, deputy director of school education said, "Schools might be teaching RSP as an optional subject. But our department don't have any data how many of the schools have opted this subject."
