The Trauma Centre at Ozarde on Mumbai-Pune Expressway is likely to be ready in a month's time, but the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has been struggling to rope in an operator to cater to accident victims from the e-way and provide them treatment during the Golden Hour - the crucial first hour after a traumatic injury, during which treatment is most likely to prevent death.

No response from private parties or state

"In the past we have made a couple of attempts to get operators for the Trauma Centre but there hasn't been any response either from private players or from the state government," said an MSRDC official.

Last August, MSRDC had invited private parties to set up the facility and operate the medical unit to treat the expressway's accident victims. In between, even the state's health department was approached with an invitation to operate the emergency health care facility, but till date the MSRDC has not received any kind of response.

How long before the air ambulance service takes off?

The setting up of infrastructure for the air ambulance service as part fo the project may take up to a year, though finishing touches are being given to other elements. Officials to invite proposals once work is complete

"Once the last few works are done, we will invite proposals from private players in the health care sector to operate the Trauma Centre and air ambulance services so that Golden Hour treatment can be provided to accident victims," said an official.

How capable will the centre be?

The MSRDC started working on the construction and setting up of the Trauma Centre and air ambulance services since 2012. The centre is being made as per Level IV standards, that is, it will have capabilities and resources of a hospital to care for trauma patients prior to their transfer to a larger medical facility.
