Two men in their twenties were found dead under mysterious circumstances near Sion-Panvel expressway in Mankhurd on Saturday morning. Both were murdered, police said.

According to the police, it appears that the two men were possibly lynched as there were several external injuries on their bodies. The two bodies were found on the roadside by a passerby, at around 8.45am, who informed the police control room and in return the Mankhurd police were alerted.

The bodies were taken to Rajawadi Hospital where they were declared dead on arrival. Police are waiting for the postmortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death, said Vilas Kanade, senior police inspector, Mankhurd police station.

The deceased have been identified as Amir Mungale, 28, and Santosh Kale, 25. "The duo lived in the slums near the highway and were unemployed," said Kanade.

Police said that there are some constructions underway near the spot where the bodies were found. The police are quizzing watchmen in the area to find leads in the case. The family are also being questioned in this regard.

Police are investigating if the duo were lynched after they were caught in an attempted robbery or if the incident is a fallout of a personal rivalry. Police said that there are no major external injuries on the body.
