The Maharashtra government on Wednesday declared drought in 151 talukas of 26 of total 36 districts in the state. The Revenue and Forest Department has come out with a Government Resolution (GR) announcing drought of the 151 tehsils, 39 fall in the moderate category and the remaining 112 are under the severe category.

The 26 districts comprise eight districts each in the Vidarbha and the Marathwada regions, five districts in North Maharashtra, four districts in western Maharashtra and Palghar district in the coastal Konkan region.

Among all 26 districts, the moderate and severe drought overlap in many talukas.

It is interesting to note that the state Cabinet had given its nod only on October 23 to announce drought-like situation in 180 Talukas of 32 districts last week. The department of revenue and forest department has come out with a Government Resolution (GR) announcing drought in 151 Talukas (Tehsils) across 26 districts in the state.

Out of the total of 151 drought Tehsils, 39 tehsils fall in the moderate category while remaining 112 are under the severe drought category.

For the first time this year, the drought declaration process has been revised and norms have been laid by the Central government which all the states will follow to streamline the process.

As per the norms, there are four triggers — area under cultivation, vegetation, rainfall and groundwater levels — which are used to determine whether the drought is moderate or severe in nature.

There are even some sub-triggers. Severe drought is declared only if three of the four triggers hold true for an area. When two triggers apply, a moderate drought is declared.

Officials from Cooperative Department said that the state government has already declared a drought-like situation in 180 tehsils with approximately 18,000 villages. Eight relief measures have already been extended to these tehsils.

Since drought has been declared as per the norms laid down by the Union Government, a memorandum seeking assistance will be sent under the NDRF to the Centre, said an official from Cooperative Department.
