INTRO: dna looks into the issue of bullying on roads that has long hassled this city

Mumbaikars are accustomed to the crazy traffic, incessant honking, bad roads and rash drivers. But lately, the city has seen a persistent increase in the number of road rage cases that can no longer be considered as mere isolated incidents.

The most recent and brutal case of road rage took place when an MNC executive was bashed up by biker bullies and his pregnant wife threatened. In another case, actress Monaz Mevawala was assaulted and her car was damaged by a rickshaw driver. These two are not the only cases that have happened in the recent past.

Nepean Sea Road resident Shriyam Chaturvedi shares, "In recent times, I have seen a visible shift in the way people drive. More and more people have become impatient and frustrated. I feel the major reason for this is that everyone spends a lot of time on roads due to the bad traffic jams and end up getting enraged."

The Mumbai traffic police department doesn't have any statistical data on the number of road rage cases as there are no specific sections under the law that deal with such a problem. The point that should be noted here is that not all cases are reported. Many a time, after abusing or fighting with each other, both parties decide to walk away rather than reporting the incident to the police.

Qaiser Khalid, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) says, "The number of such cases has increased and we are taking necessary action. We have increased patrolling and even at night, there are officers to check on rash driving."
