In an attempt to make Bandra-Kurla Complex the first Smart City in India, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is studying the draft bid document on developing the area as Smart BKC.

There are plans with the development authority officials to come out with the tender document in a month's time.

"Draft bid document is ready and we are in the process of studying and revising the document. It should be through within a fortnight's time," said an MMRDA official.

The reason behind state officials being cautious is that this is the first of its kind project and the documents too are being drafted for the first time.

Last November, the MMRDA had received response from private firms after it had floated Express of Interest for the project.

A technical and financial feasibility report on Smart Bandra Kurla Complex shows that five features will be provided under the project, which will perhaps be India's first 'Smart City' project and will be ready only in 2017.

Under this project, there will be WiFi hotspots, smart parking, smart street lights, video analytics and surveillance and citizen mobile application. The overall project estimate is Rs19.41 crore.

As per the plans, there will be 5Mbps wireless internet connectivity through 74 wireless access points only in 'G' block of BKC apart from 'E' block.

Similarly, 3,000 parking slots will be covered to provide 'smart parking' so that 19,000 litres of fuel as well as 7,800 man days can be saved annually as people will not have to hunt for parking slots.

Third concept will be having smart street lights covering 841 street lights in the BKC. Energy consumption can be reduced by almost 40% if the idea is implemented and also reduce the overall maintenance cost.

Under the video analytics and surveillance E&G Blocks of BKC will have 90 CCTV cameras involving coordination among security agencies.

Lastly, citizen centric app will enable people to zero in on ATMs, restaurants, hospitals, fuel pumps, road maps, etc apart from it being complaint redressal point.
