After violating traffic rules on the Mumbai-Pune expressway, you will no longer be able to escape as closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed at the expressway. These cameras will not only capture the footage, but will also give the vehicle registration number to the highway police.

An NGO, Fulora Foundation, has developed a new software, which is installed in the CCTV with the help of which the NGO as well as the highway police can monitor the real- time activity of the expressway even on their mobile phones. The police can also take a snapshot of vehicles violating traffic rules.

Tanmay Pendse, 29, a businessman and Fulora’s project director for Safety on the E-way, said, “The main purpose of the software is to monitor and capture pictures of those vehicles, which are changing lanes frequently on the e-way. We are also receiving positive response from the highway officials.”

“The system is connected to a server and the information will be sent to the toll booth, which will be connected to a printer and the print will be handed over to the highway police, who will then take the required action,” added Pendse.

Superintendent of police (highway) Dilip Bhujbal, said, “The system will be useful. We have checked the software and asked the NGO to customise it for better performance of the software,”
Bhujbal further added, “Once the software starts functioning properly, the increase in the number of traffic violations and road accidents on the expressway will reduce and many lives can be saved. It is important the people to realise the need to follow traffic rule.”
