Two years ago, he lost his father to a heart attack, but that didn't stop a visually impaired Navi Mumbai youth from completing his education. Rajkumar Hunasnale, now 22 years old, travelled daily to Worli to prepare for his SSC examinations, in which he scored 79.2%.

Rajkumar is the second youngest of his parents' five children. After their father passed away, the youngest sibling, 20-year-old Yogesh began taking care of everyone at home. A civil engineering student, Yogesh is also working at a private firm.

A student at Utkarsh Night High School, Worli, Rajkumar said that he dropped out of school for two years after Std VII. "Someone told us that visiting a doctor in Hyderabad would bring my vision back. Hence we went for treatment, but it did not happen," said the 22-year-old, adding that he enrolled at the night school in Worli after that.

Rajkumar said that he preferred studying in the school as the students would be given Braille, which were provided to the school by an NGO, Masoom Education Organization. "I am grateful to them for helping students like me. Since I used to travel all the way from Navi Mumbai to Worli, I never studied much at home, as I would get tired after leaving for school at 2pm and reaching home by 11pm," he said.

Rajkumar also said that while he is happy with his results, he is in a fix about the kind of course he should pursue, which can help give him employment 'despite of (his) disability. "We have been facing financial problems after our father expired," he added.

Elder sister Vanita said she would constantly fret whenever Rajkumar would travel to school all by himself. "Since he was studying in a night school, he would always return home late. We are happy his efforts paid off, and he scored so well," Vanita added.

The NGO that helped Rajkumar

Masoom is a not-for-profit organisation with a passion for establishing quality education in night schools. In order to achieve this, Masoom partners with night schools to facilitate the "Night School Transformation Programme". The Programme is specifically tailored to meet the needs of the night school and individual students. Currently, the NGO supports 30 night schools.
