US president Barack Obama may have asked Americans to shun Indian medical services, but an Indian doctor has won the bronze medal at the World Cup of Endoscopy, proving that the country ranks high as far as use of medical technology is concerned.

Dr Amit Maydeo, who works with Breach Candy and Jaslok hospitals, created history in gastrointestinal endoscopy by winning the medal on Tuesday. America won the gold and China bagged the silver.

Introducing this world cup, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), one of the biggest organisations in the field of endoscopy, had held the competition at the Arie Crown Theater at McCormick Place Convention Center, Chicago. More than 5,000 experts were present at the event.

Maydeo had submitted his video to ASGE three months ago. His film described a new technique called ‘spyglass pancreatoscopy-guided cannulation and retrieval of a deeply migrated pancreatic duct stent’. Maydeo said, “It’s like a dream come true. I think getting the 3rd spot is not bad since it is the first time. Next year too, doctors will work hard to take part in the competition and it will not be long before an Indian doctor wins the gold.”

His technique makes surgery for chronic pancreatitis less painful for patients. Patients having this condition suffer inflammation of the pancreas which causes a narrowing of the duct and resultant pain. Gastroenterologists put a stent in the pancreas to correct the problem, but sometimes the stent gets dislocated. Removal of the stent is difficult by endoscopy and patients have to undergo surgery. Maydeo’s procedure demonstrated how the stent can be removed, without painful surgery, using spyglass and endoscopy.
