After a delay of about two years, the Mumbai traffic police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation have reached a common ground on repairing a damaged sewer line running below the prominent Napeansea Road. The traffic police recently granted BMC permission to fix the rupture.

Why was there so much delay in starting repairs?
dna on June 14 had reported that civic officials had attributed the delay to the traffic department's hesitation to shut the busy road for BMC to tear it open for repairs as it was the daily commuting route of VIPs, such as the chief minister and the chief justice of Bombay high court, among others.
Joint commissioner of police (traffic) BK Upadhyay said, "We receive thousands of repair requests from BMC regularly. Moreover, there were elections and festivals lined up. Now, it is a relatively better time to carry out the repair," he said.

Where is the damage?
The damage point is located between Sagar Kunj building and JC Chowk.

What was the fallout of it?
About 2 million litres of untreated waste water was being released into the sea, thus polluting it heavily.
Civic officials said earlier dirty water would flow to the Banganga pumping station, from where it was sent to Lovegrove pumping station in Worli for treatment before being released into the Arabian Sea. But now, the untreated refuse moves directly from Banganga to the sea.

What's the repair plan?
"In the next four to five days, we will be providing a comprehensive plan to the traffic police on the way to go about the repairs. After that, we will carry out the work at night and put metal plates on that portion of the road during the day," a senior civic official informed.

In May, the corporation set up a facility to treat the raw sewage at Banganga, but the efforts would still mean violation of water pollution norms as the centre is not among the six discharge points in the city. So, the civic body has been receiving several notices from the Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board.
