The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), on Friday, arrested six-persons from the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Kurla for allegedly smuggling 7 kilograms of gold in the form of gold bars, amounting to a total of Rs 2.3 crore.
According to the DRI officials, a trap was laid at LTT when they had intercepted four persons(carriers) who were carrying the 60 gold bars (each weighing 100 grams) that were concealed in specially made cavities inside the belts of their trousers. Following their arrest, it was revealed that the gold was smuggled in from the Indo-Nepal Border but has originated in Dubai. The carriers had reached Patna by bus and then arrived in Mumbai via train. The carriers were promised a remuneration of 20,000 each for smuggling the gold into India.
They had gone to Dubai in search of odd jobs when they were recruited into the racket.
"We interrogated them to understand who the kingpin of the smuggler's gang was. Subsequently, a jeweller who was to procure the gold and sell it in the local market and his employee who had come to Kalbadevi to receive the gold from these carriers were nabbed," said a DRI official.
"All the six accused have been arrested and sent to judicial custody until June 2," he added.
