After almost a month of closure, all the three lanes of south-bound Dindoshi flyover will reopen on Friday morning.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation had shut the Dindoshi flyover on Western Express Highway at Goregaon, beginning from the night of May 2.

According to sources, final bitumen laying work on the remaining patches of the bridge will be carried out during the intervening night of Thursday-Friday.

Thereafter, a few hours will be needed for the fresh layer of bitumen to settle down properly.

The 550-metre-long bridge has been giving nightmares to motorists due to the bottleneck created during repair work. Currently, only one lane has been kept open for light utility vehicles, two and three wheelers.

Traffic police department has permitted MSRDC to finish the repair work by May 31, failing which, a penalty will be levied on the erring party.

This bridge is also called Goregaon Mulund Link Road Junction flyover.

Structural defect on this bridge was spotted on October 1 last year, and since then, it has been a challenge for state officials to undertake repair work. Questions were also raised over the construction quality, and an IIT-Bombay report mentioned that the structure had inadequate concrete strength and the cracks seemed to be due to structural design and bending of the slabs. The likely reasons may be due to fatigue, overloading and the curved shape of the bridge.

This bridge was constructed between April 13, 1998 and April 12, 1999 by New Delhi-based VRM Global Infrastructure for Rs11.5 crore. The authorities do not have any plans to initiate action against the contractor as the structure is beyond the defect liability period of 5 years mentioned in the tender contract. The approximate cost of present repairs is around Rs70 lakh, of which Rs56 lakh was sanctioned by the MSRDC on February 25.
