After a monsoon break, Dharavi’s museum on wheel again opened its door in the bylanes of Dharavi to showcase the talent of a local artist. The fourth exhibition of the museum is inspired by the blue tarpaulin sheets used by the locals during monsoon. The local bag-maker rather than using leather made a variety of bags using colourful tarpaulin sheets.

Speaking about the new tarpaulin bag concept, Kavina Parekh, one of the organisers, said: “After the first three exhibitions, we were working on this concept for four months during the monsoon season. 'The Waterproof Project' is done with the help of local leather worker. When we came up with the concept not many leather workers appreciated the idea to try and make bags out of tarpaulin. One of the leather workers agreed and we just provided him with the resources, the design was done by him according to his own creatively.  It is inspired by the tarpaulin sheets which these locals use to cover their home during the monsoon season.”

While, the leather worker thought it was a challenge for him and he wanted to complete it to show his creativity. Shiraz Kamal who has been making leather bags for more than 12 years, said: “I took more than three months to complete this project and give them the final products. It is not only waterproof but can also manage heavyweight. Looking at the exhibited products, if someone wants to buy, I will happily be ready to take the order and make few products for them.”

A new series of colourful bags, wallets with complex and detailed patterns, shapes and sizes were displayed during the exhibition. The first experiment which started with bags, later on, extended into boxes and belts to name a few.

The tarpaulin sheet cost us approximately around 25,000 to experiment this new range of waterproof products.

The museum on wheel in Dharavi was formed with an aim to develop a platform for the small scale businesses of the locals. The museum travels across the areas to showcase the talent of Dharavi locals.

It was conceptualised by Amanda Pinatih, an art curator from Netherland and Jorge Mañes Rubio. While, now it is handled by Kruti Saraiya, Kavina Parekh, and Saachi Mehta.
