Amidst rising cases of crimes against women in the suburban railway network, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state government will try for better co-ordination between GRP and RPF. He added that the state would consider the report of the justice (retired) Chandrashekhar Dharmadhikari committee, which was established to examine ways to reduce crimes against women, and act on it soon.

Speaking in the state legislative assembly during question hour on Tuesday, Fadnavis said that for the past two to three years, the co-ordination between the GRP and RPF had been given a formal format. He added that they would give fresh instructions for better co-ordination.

Amit Deshmikh (Congress) and others had asked questions about rising crimes against women in Mumbai's suburban railway network.

Fadnavis said they were yet to take a decision on the Dharmadhikari committee and added that they would consider the report and act on its recommendations soon.

The state government said 332 cases of crimes against women including rapes, murder, attempt to murder, molestation, eve-teasing, theft, kidnapping and injury were registered in the jurisdiction of the Mumbai railway commissionerate in 2013. However, this rose to 354 in 2014. Of the 332 cases filed in 2013, a total of 217 were solved, while the number of solved cases the next year was 232.

"The number of crimes has risen. After the Nirbhaya case in Delhi, the scope of the law was increased, so the registration of cases also rose. I admit that the cases have increased compared to the previous year," said minister of state for home Dr Ranjit Patil, while adding that however, this rise in the number of cases lodged should not be interpreted as an increase in insecurity for women.

A separate helpline for commuters has been started on 9833331111 and special helplines for the aid of women and children can be accessed on 1275 on the Central Railway and 1311 on the Western Railway.

Patil said a 'Nirbhaya squad' consisting of undercover women officers who would maintain surveillance had also been formed. Patil added that the number of vacancies in the officers cadre was more than that in the constables. CCTVs have also been installed to curb offences.
