Deonar man robs wife\'s gold ornaments, tracked at Nepal border

A man who had decamped with his wife's gold ornaments worth Rs13.90 lakh from Deonar was arrested in Bihar, near the Indo-Nepal border by a team of Deonar police officers. According to the Deonar police, the complainant, 40-year-old Mehmunna Shaikh told police that she married the accused, identified as 37-year-old Mohammed Shaikh 15 years ago.

A man who had decamped with his wife's gold ornaments worth Rs13.90 lakh from Deonar was arrested in Bihar, near the Indo-Nepal border by a team of Deonar police officers. According to the Deonar police, the complainant, 40-year-old Mehmunna Shaikh told police that she married the accused, identified as 37-year-old Mohammed Shaikh 15 years ago.

For the last three years, Mehmunna had been living in Dubai due to work and would visit her husband and kids in Deonar yearly. During those visits, she would deposit her cash and gold with Mohammed.

Police sub-inspector Nilesh Shewale, Deonar police, who arrested Mohammed from Bihar, said that the couple's marriage was on the rocks. "In February, when Mehmunna arrived in India, she asked Mohammed about the cash and gold, to which he started being evasive," the PSI said, adding: "A few days later, Mohammed disappeared from his home. On February 27, Mehmunna approached the police and registered a case against her husband."

A team of police officers investigating the case received a tip-off about Mohammed possibly hiding in Bihar, his native place. Following this tip-off, a team of three policemen from Deonar police left for Bihar and tracked Mohammed at Thakurganj. close to Nepal border.

PSI Shewale said: "Mohammed had chalked out his escape route to Nepal, with plans of settling there. After tracing his location, we zeroed in on a room and raided it on Friday night. After that, we arrested Mohammed and brought him to Mumbai on Sunday."

Deonar police have booked Mohammed under IPC Sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 380 (theft in dwelling house).
