A 65-year-old Colaba man, whose body was found in a decomposed state in his house, lived a lonely life. One of his sons who works in Muscat claimed the body on Saturday and completed his last rites.

Alamin Kabali, 38, said he had no contact with his father Al Farooque Kabali since past 10 years. However, after hearing about his father's death in such neglected way, he returned to claim the body.

Earlier, Farooque's separated wife had refused to claim his body, while his other son, who lives in the US, said he was too "busy" and didn't have time, said the police.

On Thursday, Farooque's body was found in a decomposed state at his 3 BHK flat in Sagar Sangeet, a sea-facing high-rise in Colaba. Though legally he was separated from his wife three years ago, he had been living alone past ten years.

Building residents said Kabali had not even paid electricity, water and maintenance bills for past two years. He had been living without power since then.

"He was a soft-spoken man. However, he interacted very little with neighbours after separation from his wife who stays at Napean Sea Road. He would come to house only in the night to sleep," said a resident.

Investing Officer Babasaheb Salunkhe said the house looked spartan. "It was full of dust and dirt made by pigeons. There was not even a single bedsheet to wrap his body. Apart from a mobile phone worth Rs 500, we did not find any money from his house."

Farooque had a lifetime membership in the Radio club in Colaba and had another house there. "He would not interact with anyone in the society and in the club as well. We are yet to search his other house," said another police officer.

A doctor from St George Hospital said Farooque might have died over two weeks ago as the body was fully decomposed. "The cause of death could not be revealed during the postmortem and it can be ascertained only after the chemical analysis report from a forensic laboratory."
