The first environment-friendly air-conditioned (AC) toilet was inaugurated in the city on Saturday in Dadar. The solar panels installed in the toilet complex will provide electricity to run the air conditioner and other electric equipment like sanitary napkin vending machine.

Yuva Sena chief Aditya Thackeray inaugurated the AC toilet, which is claimed to be the first in the country to run on electricity generated by solar panels installed in the complex. He said that the toilet complex has been developed as a part of CSR activity and the initiative aims to keep the city clean.

"The civic body will construct such toilets at other locations also," said Thackeray. However, he added, that the contribution of Mumbaikars will also be required to maintain cleanliness in the city.

Amey Ghole, a Shiv Sena Corporator, has been instrumental in making the initiative possible. "We had promised before the civic polls to provide sanitary pads for women public toilets, which will be now available in the new AC toilets," he said. Women will have to feed a Rs 5 coin to the vending machine to avail the napkins. The toilet is located near the Fire Brigade building along the Mumbai-Pune state transport bus stand in Dadar (east).

Apart from the solar panel, the roof is made of toughened glass to allow save electricity costs in the day time. "All arrangements to save electricity have been incorporated and the model will be replicated across the city under the CSR," said Ghole.

BMC Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, who was also present at the inaugural function, said that the city can be made with the help of citizens.
