Cuffe Parade residents have raised a stink over alleged illegal encroachment by fishermen onto a government plot which is now being used to dry fish. They claim that the stench is unbearable and many have fallen ill due to the unclean surroundings outside their building.

The four-acre encroached plot, No 105 at Cuffe Parade, has in fact been allotted for the underground metro project. Local fishermen, being denied permission to dry their fish at Sasoon Dock, are now flocking to the interiors of the city. The open plot, close to Cuffe Parade Residents Association (CPRA) garden, has led to severe inconvenience to morning walkers.

"We are unable to open our windows when indoors due to the unbearable stench emanating from the leftovers of the fish. The fishermen drying the fish illegally should be strictly dealt with," said Padmakar Nandekar, Secretary General, CPRA.

"We are helpless as the government authorities are turning a blind eye to this issue, which can affect the health of local residents," said Nandekar.

Another resident from the nearby building said, "My daughter has already fallen sick during her exams and has missed out on important lectures. We cannot afford to fall sink. We are deprived of fresh air and have stopped opening the windows of our flats."

"Morning walks in the garden have become difficult due to the unbearable stench, and we want the issue solved or we will have to protest on the streets," said the resident.
