The 'long hand of the law' might be cliched but it's catching up. In what will definitely come as bad news for criminals who managed to escape after committing crime in the city, the Mumbai crime branch has launched a special drive to nab the wanted accused in various cases registered with them over the past few years.
The crime branch, as part of the drive started in January, has instructed all units to start activating their informer network and locate wanted criminals in their respective areas. In just one month, it has been able to track 101 wanted accused in cases registered across the city.
"There are a number of cases in which at least one accused is wanted. Our aim is to ensure that all these criminals are behind bars; hence this drive," said additional commissioner of police (crime) KMM Prasanna. "The work of locating the wanted accused was given to all units and, so far, our men have done a wonderful job."
During the course of this drive, it was revealed that some of the wanted accused were already behind bars in various jails across the state, while a few had died sometime back. "For those who have passed, we have collected the death certificates of the accused," said Prasanna.
According to a crime branch officer, 610 accused are still wanted and, hence, the drive to track them down and nab them is likely to continue.
