Encroachment has apparently resurfaced on the green patch of government-owned land
The Cuffe Parade Residents Association (CPRA) on Wednesday approached the Cuffe Parade police to complain against the alleged encroachers on the Bayview Marina garden. The city Collector had initiated demolition work on the illegal shanties which now have apparently resurfaced after the demolition.
The Cuffe Parade police have filed cross-complaints against the guards and the encroachers over the alleged assault. Tensions continue to mount as the slum dwellers allege that CPRA has restricted their movement in the garden. The CPRA who is currently maintaining the green patch of government land in Cuffe Parade has repeatedly demanded official possession for maintenance.
"The guards and the slum dwellers got involved in fistfights and so we took the complaint of the injured person. The guards have allegedly tried to restrict the movement of the slum dwellers in the garden, which led to the argument and turned into a fight", said Rashmi Jadhav, Senior Inspector, Cuffe Parade police station.
Padmakar Nandekar, Secretary General of CPRA, said, "We have not restricted the slum dwellers to use the garden. Despite the Collector demolishing the illegal shanties, attempts are being made to usurp the green patch of land by developing slums. It is the only green patch here, which we are trying to protect."
"The slum dwellers were upset that their shanties were demolished by the City Collector. They have built them again and we will soon conduct a meeting with the government authorities to ask them to take stringent action against such people.", said Nandekar.
