A sessions court on Saturday convicted a 28-year-old man for killing his wife, and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court, presided over by judge SB Ranpise, held that the dying declaration given by the wife of the accused was very strong evidence, and helped the court to punish the accused.

The prosecution's case dates back to September 2013, when Dasarath Sasane, who was originally a resident of Kalyan, had visited his wife's maternal house in Elphinstone. Police claimed that the accused, who was unemployed, used to end up fighting with his wife frequently and would demand money from her.

Even on the day of the incident, the accused demanded Rs100 for alcohol, and the wife declined. Sasane, in a fit of rage, poured a five litre can of kerosine on his wife and set her ablaze.

However, after she started screaming, a neighbour entered their house and tried to douse the fire. By that time, Sasane realised his mistake and called for an auto rickshaw, and rushed her to KEM hospital.

Medical reports claimed that the victim had suffered 40% burn injuries. Meanwhile, the wife gave her statement and narrated the entire incident to the police. She passed away immediately after recording her declaration.

The accused was arrested a day after the incident and the prosecution examined a total of 12 witnesses in the case.

At the time of passing the verdict, the court held that there was no reason for the victim to record a fake statement at the time of her death, and thus convicted Sasane.
