A couple was arrested in Virar on Tuesday night after they cheated another couple whom they had promised to sell their newborn son for Rs 1.5 lakh. According to the police, action may also be taken against the couple who bought the baby, depending on the investigation.

With a notarized sale agreement in hand, Pooja Parmar approached Virar police station saying that she had an agreement with 22-year-old Ayesha Khan to buy her son.

Ayesha admitted herself at Ganesh Hospital in Virar (East) under Pooja's name and gave birth to a boy on February 15. Pooja told Ayesha that she would pay her Rs 1 lakh if she had a girl and Rs 1.5 lakh if she had a boy.

"I bought the baby for Rs 1.5 lakh as we do not have any children. Ayesha and her husband Shakil approached us when Ayesha was 7 months pregnant through Dr Bhagwan Kaate and gynaecologist Dr DD Mahimkar. She got admitted at Ganesh hospital in my name. Later, we entered into a notary agreement which mentioned the sale of the baby boy," said Pooja Parmar.

"After she delivered the baby boy, she gave him to us, but later got an offer from another couple who said they will pay Rs 3 lakh. She told us that the baby was ill and took him away from us. When she refused to return our money, we complained to the police," she added.

A senior officer from Virar police station said, "Both women would face the whip of law as its illegal to sell or buy babies. The complainant approached the civic body and took a birth certificate claiming that the baby boy was delivered by her and named him Tanish Parmar, which is cheating the government," said the official.

"The accused couple did not want a third child, so they decided to sell it. We have arrested them under section 419 (cheating by impersonation) ,420 (cheating), 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code," said Sunil Mane, inspector, Virar police station.

"We will also probe the role of the hospital and the doctors as they too have been alleged to be involved, said Mane.
