A couple from Badlapur conned another couple who was their neighbour from the past 10 years. The accused couple, Mahendra Dhodiba Dhete, 38, and wife Vaishali Dhete, 35, conned their neighbours for Rs5.75 lakh.
The accused couple moved in to Navom Saivihar apartment, Mohanand nagar, at Badlapur west a few years ago. Initially, the couple shared a healthy bond with the duped couple, Sadhna Suresh Girigosavi, 38, and Suresh Girigosavi, 40. A few months after moving in, the Dhete's borrowed Rs1 lakh from the Girigosavi's, saying that they needed to open a business and run a small office in the area. However, after 6 months, when the duped couple asked for their money to be returned, the accused duo said that they would do so, later. In 2007, the accused (Mahendra), lured the neighbour (Sadhna) under the guise of love and filmed an obscene video of her. He later threatened her, asking for money, saying that he would upload the video online. Sadhna then borrowed Rs 3.5 lakh from her sister-in-law and gave the entire amount to Mahendra, who later asked her for an additional Rs1.5 lakh, which she delayed in giving. Mahendra then shared a video of hers with his friend circle, over WhatsApp. He informed Sadhna of this, who then narrated the ordeal to her family. A case has been filed against the Dhete's, who are now absconding.
Senior police inspector, Badlapur West, Ashok Vandekar said, "The accused (man) and the neighbour (wife) had mutually developed a physical relationship, because of which we have not registered a rape case. The accused have been absconding, after they came to know that the duped couple have registered a case agsinst them."
The accused has been charged under section 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and IT act.
