The state home dept has, through a circular, instructed law enforcing agencies to take action against the manufacturers and sellers of plastic national flags. On the occasion of Independence Day and Republic Day people pin the Tricolour on their dress to express patriotism. However, the next day these flags are discarded, which amounts to an insult as per the Flag Code of India.

Flags made of plastic are non perishable and hence difficult to dispose of as per the norms laid down in the Flag Code and hence are found discarded on roads and public places. The department has instructed the law enforcing agencies to take actions against anyone who manufactures, sells or distributes plastic national flags.

In order to create awareness about how to use the national flag properly, the department has urged the local administration at gram panchayat, taluka and district level to take the help of non-governmental organisations, students, TV and newspapers. It has also ordered the police to take action against anyone insulting the Tricolour.
