Cop beats up woman, daughter in Mira Road

A constable posted at Nagpada police station allegedly assaulted a 52-year-old-woman and her daughter on a busy stretch in Mira Road for complaining to Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation against his relative who repeatedly blocked the road with a cart.

The constable, identified as Arvind Pol, also smashed a chair on Surekha Gaikwad, a resident of Silver Park in Mira Road. She runs a roadside shop where the incident took place. She complained to the corporation against hawkers Mahendra Shirole and his wife Tejasvi for allegedly obstructing the road. They had allegedly taunted and abused her when the corporation did not take action. 

On Wednesday, the constable, who is related to the two hawkers, allegedly went on a rampage and brutally assaulted Surekha and her daughter Madhavi, 31. 

“They were threatening us for almost a week after I had complained against them for obstructing the road. Last night, Pol and his wife assaulted me,” said Surekha. 

“They dragged me on to the road, and kept beating me until passersby intervened and rushed me to hospital. The CCTV camera at the spot captured the entire incident. The footage was submitted to the police,” she added. Jagdish Shinde, Inspector, Kanakia police station said, “We have registered a case of rioting and assault against eight persons, including the constable,” said Shinde.
